Transcription Tom

I’ve been listening to Podcasts for a long time. I even created one back in 2007 with Apple’s own podcast creation tool.

In 2020 I launched a service called namedropped that searches through podcasts and sends you a notification if a term of interest to you gets mentioned. But I was only able to search through podcast summaries present in the RSS feeds. Transcription was still too expensive at the time to do on a large scale.

That changed when Open AI launched their open source Whisper AI model. It offers incredible transcription precision at the fraction of the cost of previous services. I realised that there is a lot of demand just for transcribing audio and giving users the text version. It’s useful for journalists who do interviews, podcasters, church sermons and more. That’s why I launched Transcription Tom. A simple drag and drop uploader that converts audio and videos to text in a matter of seconds.
